About Blog / Publications

In Reason, a Blog / Publication (or "blog" for short) is a container that holds posts ("post" is a fancy word for "article"). Your site can have any number of blogs. For example, you might have one blog for News and one blog for Opinion pieces.

Before posts show up on your site, you need to first create at least one Blog / Publication and attach it to a page on your site. (For information about writing posts for your Blog / Publication, see News / Posts.)

Create a Blog / Publication

How to create a new Blog / Publication:

  1. Click Blogs / Publications from the Content Types menu.
  2. Click Add Blog / Publication.
  3. Fill out the Blog / Publication form:
    • Publication Name: The name of your blog or publication.  Appears on live site.
    • Publication Type: Select Blog or Newsletter. (Note: It doesn't matter which you select; there's currently no difference between the two types.)
    • Posts Per Page: The number of posts you'd like to show up on your blog summary page before Next/Previous pagination.
    • RSS Feed URL: Enter a lowercase version of the blog’s title without any spaces.  This is the URL where people can subscribe to your RSS feed.
    • Description: A short description of the blog.
    • Date Format: Determines how you'd like the blog post dates to appear on your site.
    • Allow Front End Posting:  Front-end posting allows logged-in users to post and edit blog posts while viewing your site in a web browser (without going into the Reason interface).
    • New Post Notification: Enter usernames or email addresses, separated by commas, of people who should be notified when a new blog post is published to the site. Leave this field blank if you don't want any notification to be sent.
    • Hold Posts for Review: Select Yes to moderate posts; choose No to allow posts to be published without review.
    • Allow Comments: Enables or disables comments for all posts in the blog. (Note: Even if comments are enabled on the blog level, individual News / Post entries can have comments turned on or off on a per-post basis.)
    • New Comment Notification: Enter usernames or email addresses, separated by commas, of people who should be notified when a new comment is made. Leave this field blank if you don't want any notification to be sent.
    • Hold Comments for Review: Select Yes to hold comments for review before they are posted to the website. Select No to allow comments to post immediately without review.
    • Issue-based: Select Yes to group posts together into issues, similar to a print-based magazine (note that you will need to set up at least one issue before any posts will appear). Select No for standard chronological display of posts.
    • Broken into sections: Select Yes to group posts together into sections, rather than a standard standard chronological display of posts. (Note: to use this feature you will need to enable News Sections on your site and create the sections for your publication.)
  4. Click Save and Continue Editing.
  5. Click Who is allow to post? from the left sidebar menu.
  6. Select a Group from the list, or Add Group and then Select it from the list. (Learn more about Groups.)
  7. If your blog doesn't allow comments, click Finish.
  8. If your blog allows comments, click Who is allowed to comment? from the left sidebar menu.
  9. Select a Group from the list, or Add Group and then Select it from the list. (Learn more about Groups.)
  10. Click Finish.

Managing Posts and Featured Posts

Managing Posts

Managing Posts allows you to select News / Posts that you'd like to show up in your Blog / Publication.  You can also assign News / Posts to certain Blog / Publications when adding or editing your posts.

  1. Click Blog / Publications from the Content Types Menu
  2. Click Manage Posts from the left sidebar menu.
  3. Click Select in the row corresponding to the News / Post that you'd like to publish.  Repeat for as many News / Posts that you'd like.
  4. To remove posts from your Blog / Publication, click Deselect next to any post that has been selected.
  5. Click Finish in the left sidebar menu.

Featured Posts

In general, Blog / Publication pages display the newest posts first.  Featured Posts let posts show up at the top of your Blog / Publication page even if they aren't the most recent.

  1. Click Blog / Publications from the Content Types Menu
  2. Click Featured Posts from the left sidebar menu.
  3. Click Select in the row corresponding to the News / Post that you'd like to make featured.  Repeat for as many News / Posts that you'd like to feature.
  4. Use the blue arrow under the Sort column to sort the display order of Featured Posts.
  5. To un-feature posts, click Deselect next to any post that has been selected.
  6. Click Finish in the left sidebar menu.

Displaying Posts on Other Pages

You can easily display your most recent blog entries in the sidebar of any page on your site.

  1. Edit the page on which you want to show the most recent posts
  2. Change the page type to Publication Related. This page type will place the posts in the sidebar; if you want them to appear elsewhere on the page, or if your page is more complex, ask your administrator to add a custom page type based on the Publication Related page type.  Note: If you don't see the Publication Related page type, you will need to ask an administrator to do this step for you.
  3. Click Save and Continue Editing.
  4. Click Associate a related publication from the left sidebar menu.
  5. Attach any publications whose posts you want to appear on the page.
  6. Click Finish.
