Adding Images to Your Site

There are three different ways to get images into your site:

  1. Uploading single images
  2. Batch importing images
  3. Borrowing images from other Reason sites

Uploading Single Images

  1. Click Images from the Content Types Menu in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Add Image. The Adding Image form will be displayed.
  3. Give your image a Name (required)
  4. Click Choose a file... beside the Image field.
    • The image must be in a web format (jpg, gif, png). If the image is in another format, you will need to convert it.
    • The image can be any size; if necessary, Reason will resize it to an appropriate scale for the web.
  5. Select an image on your computer or network drive.
  6. Click Open. You will see an image upload progress bar and your image appear in Reason.
  7. Fill in the rest of the Adding Image form:
    • Short Caption: Used under thumbnail versions of the image. This should be short, like "Captain America"
    • Long Caption: Used under large-size versions of the image. This could be more descriptive, like "Superman: More powerful than a locomotive. Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound." This does not have to be filled out if the short caption is enough.
    • Photographer: The photographer of the image.
    • Keywords: For help in searching for images.
    • Photo Taken: Allows you to enter the date and time that the photo was taken. If the image is from a digital camera, Reason may be able to find out automatically when the picture was shot.
    • Original Image Format: Digital (for digital image), Print (for printed image), or Slide (from a slide).
    • Sharing: Shared (other sites can use this image) or Private.
  8. Click Save and Continue Editing and check your work
  9. Click Finish from the left sidebar menu to exit.

Batch Importing Images

Batch Importing images makes it possible to upload a large group of images at once, saving you the work of uploading them one at a time.

  1. Click Images from the Content Types Menu in the left sidebar.
  2. Click Batch Import Images
  3. Select the images you wish to import into Reason. Click Browse. Each time you select an image another Browse button will appear (up to 25 times)
  4. Enter any information about the images into the remaining fields. You can leave these fields blank if the information is different for the different photos.
  5. Click Import Photos. Please click it only once. The web server will take some time to process the images -- particularly if they are big, or if you are importing many at once.
  6. When Reason is done importing the images, it should show you a list of all the images it imported. (In some instances, the page may "time out" while processing the images, in which case you will see a blank screen. If this happens, click the browser's back button, then click Images again and select the Pending items (xx) link.)
  7. You can then either review the imported images (which will still need to be approved one-by-one before being available) or batch import another set of images.

Borrowing Images from other Reason Sites

Borrowing images allows you to use images from other sites without uploading duplicate content.

  1. Click Images from the Content Types Menu in the left sidebar.
  2. Click the Borrow menu tab. If you have previously borrowed images from another site, those images will appear first.
  3. Scroll down to the Unselected images (in other words, those that are not borrowed by your site yet)
  4. Use the filters to find images you want to use, or just page through the available images.
  5. When you find an image you want to use, click Select in that image row. It will become available to be placed on your site, and is moved up to the Selected list.

Placing Images on your Pages

There are three main ways to place images into your Reason pages:

  1. Standard: images appear in the right column of the page
  2. Inline: images are embedded directly within the main text area of the page
  3. Photo Gallery: images appear in a gallery grid under the text of the page

Standard Image Placement

With standard image placement, images appear in the right column of the page. All images are linked to a larger pop-up version of the image.

  1. Click Pages from the Content Types Menu in the left sidebar.
  2. Edit the page you'd like to add an image to.
  3. In the left column menu, click Place Images on the Page
  4. Select the image you want from the available images
  5. Click Finish in the left column

Inline Image Placement

With inline image placement, images are placed directly within the main text area of the page.

  1. Click Pages from the Content Types Menu in the left sidebar.
  2. Edit the page you'd like to add an image to.
  3. In the Content text area, place your cursor where you want the image to go
  4. Click Insert Image (the little polaroid icon)
  5. Click on the image you want
  6. Under Image options, select either Thumbnail or Full
  7. Under Alignment select None, Left, or Right
  8. Click OK
  9. Click Save and Finish at the bottom of the page.

Making a Photo Gallery

A Photo Gallery page turns your page into a photo gallery. (How's that for obvious!) Any images associated with the page show up in a nicely laid out grid. Users can click on any image for a larger view and thumb through your gallery.

For an example, see the Perlman Teaching Museum Collection page.

  1. Create a new page or edit an existing page that you'd like to turn into a gallery
  2. For the Type of Page field, select Photo Gallery
  3. Click Save and Continue Editing at the bottom of the page
  4. From the sidebar menu, click Place images on this page and attach images to page in the standard way (see Standard Image Placement, above)
  5. Click Finish from the left sidebar menu and check your results!

Note: When choosing photos for a gallery, it is recommended that you choose photos that are in the same format (all horizontal or vertical) and that they have the same aspect ration.
